Kansas City's Premier Eye Care Practice

It all started with founder Felix Sabates, MD, who landed in Kansas City in 1966. After a fellowship at Harvard Medical School and five years practicing and teaching at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, he began private practice as the only retina-trained specialist in the Midwest. He took on three partners and formed Midwest Eye Specialists. As the practice grew, the name would change, but not the core values.

The Way it Should Be

Sabates Eye Centers was built on a simple philosophy: recruit the best physicians possible and provide the highest quality of care and personal service. Over 40-plus years, the formula has worked to draw more renowned, fellowship-trained specialists to the region and more patients to Sabates Eye Centers.

The Next Generation

When Dr. Nelson Sabates joined the practice in 1992, we began pursuing doctors based not only on clinical expertise but also a willingness to teach the next generation of ophthalmologists. We’ve sought the best and brightest who share this passion for treatment and teaching. And they’ve sought us.

Rooted in Research

Research and education have defined us from day one. In fact, Dr. Felix Sabates established the city’s first ophthalmology department at the old General Hospital, now UMKC’s School of Medicine. Dr. Nelson Sabates created and expanded a dedicated research arm for the department, Vision Research Center, where Sabates Eye Centers physicians continue to pioneer new procedures, instruments and medications today — for the benefit of patients in Kansas City and throughout the world.

His legacy in eye care continues through his dedication to training and lecturing ophthalmologists locally, nationally and internationally.

Dr. Sabates’ service in eye care has been recognized with many invited lectureships, honors and awards, most notably the Senior Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. His role in Kansas City’s eye care has been an important one, as past president of the Missouri Ophthalmologic Society, Kansas City Ophthalmologic Society, Retina Society and Schepens International Society, and original co-founder of the Missouri Ophthalmologic Society and Vision Research Center of UMKC.
